Ignatius of Antioch: Bishop, Writer, and Early Christian Martyr
with Jim Boyce
Ignatius, Bishop of Antioch, is a fascinating church leader, martyred at Rome in the early 2nd century. A clear admirer of the Apostle Paul, he imitates him in his own “seven” letters to the churches he leads in Asia Minor, written while he is being “dragged” to Rome on the way to being martyred there in the Roman arena. On the way he reflects on key aspects of Christian faith: on the reality of Jesus humanity, on the meaning of the cross, and on the nature of Christian discipleship and community, even in the midst of the risks of contemporary life in his time. We will explore aspects of his deep faith, his testimony to important theological commitments about the humanity of Christ, and his wit evident in the ways he expresses that commitment and its importance for Christian life.
