35 The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples, 36 and as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, "Look, here is the Lamb of God!" 37 The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. 38 When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, "What are you looking for?" They said to him, "Rabbi" (which translated means Teacher), "where are you staying?" 39 He said to them, "Come and see." They came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day.
The gospel of John does not start where we normally being our stories of Jesus. There is no birth narrative, no donkey or shepherds, or wise men or inns that are full. What John presents for us is an encounter with Jesus Christ and how an encounter with Jesus changes the course direction of our lives.
Our reading for today makes it clear that an encounter with the word of God made flesh creates a reaction on our part, John, upon meeting Christ, declares Jesus as the "Lamb of God." The other disciples hear this news and drop everything to follow Jesus. Later on, Andrew takes this knowledge and shares it with his brother.
Jesus meets every one of us "where we are" and calls out to us – telling us to "Come and see." The invitation is out there! How will you respond?
