John 10:10

10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly. – John 10:10

What does abundant living mean to us? Is it preoccupation with acquiring more wealth or more possessions? Is it living in utopia? Sometimes we think the "robe" of Christianity means that we are better than others; therefore, we should not experience any pain or sorrow in life. In other words, abundant living should be filled with all happiness and joy.

Certainly, as a heavenly father, God showers us with love; a love that sometimes we do not truly understand. God gave his only son that we may have life - a free gift from God. We do not comprehend the depth of his love until we make the time to be with him in solitude and prayer and in remembrance of Jesus' suffering and dying on the cross. This ultimate gift of love is the forgiveness of our sins and Jesus' resurrection is the promise of eternal salvation. Through this gift of forgiveness, we have the freedom to live life abundantly.

Jesus Christ has shown us the example of how to live life abundantly in this world. It is a life of service sharing God's love and compassion with one another as we work and support each other in our shared mission. The mission being to love one another as He has loved us and to love our neighbor as ourselves. All of us have been given unique strengths and talents and we often discover our talents in doing for others. St. Francis of Assisi is quoted as saying, "Be the person you are intended to be and do that as best you can." In this way, be being who you are, we participate in Jesus' ministry to bring God's message to the world.

Questions for reflection:

  • Have you shared your smile with someone today?
  • Are you aware of your neighbor's recent joy or sorrow?
  • Have you taken time to listen to someone today?
  • Have you taken time for personal meditation today?

Prayer:

Dear God, thank you for your everlasting love and presence with us. Thank you for your example of how to live life abundantly. Guide us in sharing your love. Amen
