16 When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea, 17 got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. 18 The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing. 19 When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were terrified. 20 But he said to them, "It is I; do not be afraid." – John 6:16-20
As anyone would be, the disciples were scared as they saw something, or someone, walking on the water towards them. Jesus quickly comforted them and told them, "Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid." But Peter still did not trust it was Jesus and asked Jesus to command him to come to him on the water.
I know I would do exactly as Peter did - trust, but verify.
This brings up a very concerning topic for me. If someone came to my front door and told me he was the Son of God, I would probably not believe him. Believing in God is one thing, but actually seeing him in person is another. Would I turn down Jesus to come into my house? I hope not! But, I have given this a lot of thought and on a regular basis I ask myself, am I ready for God to walk into my life? If I am, what would I say when he is standing in front of me? Should I ask him to do a miracle? Or would that be testing God?
Knowing that God could walk into my life at any time, this question makes me think about my faith and actually makes me feel closer to God. Would I be terrified as Peter was; most likely, yes! But, hopefully, I would quickly come to a place of trust and faith, just as did Peter.
