Lauren J. Wrightsman
In the dawning of the midnight hours
I fitfully wait for sleep.
The silence of the household
the tick-tock of the clock
the snores of the dog beside me
the light of a lonely lamp
amidst
the cacophony of worries in my mind.
May I remember
in these restless days
in these long and anxious nights
other songs I sing to you.
Songs of praise in which I remember that
You, O God, are my King!
Generation upon generation
tell stories of your mighty deeds
May I sing the songs of wisdom.
Remind me to taste of your grace
in the day that is ahead.
May I find, in you, my refuge
through darkness traveled
shadows of inky black
May I find in you my hope.
A song of lament fills my soul.
You draw near.
Nearer, my God, to thee. Nearer still.
Nearer, never far.
I wait, and watch,
I watch and wait.
As darkness gives way to light
the bird song starts to sing,
the sun arises yet again,
the dog awakes
stretches
scratches
takes a lap of water
And turns to me…
You are the God of grace.
