I give you a new commandment, that you love one another.
Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another.
– John 13:34-36
Jesus said to love one another. While most youth know how to express love to those they are close to, it is much more challenging to show love to a stranger.
This summer our 5th through 8th grade youth stepped out of their comfort zone during their week of camp called Summer of Service to do just that, show love to someone they do not know. On Tuesday morning, we went to Presbyterian Homes for our service site. At first, our youth were very hesitant about interacting with the residents there, the majority of whom were at least 80 years old. After receiving a short introduction about the history and mission of Presbyterian Homes, our youth were split up into 6 groups doing a variety of activities on different floors with the residents. Some played bingo, others baked, a few went on a pontoon ride, and the rest went for walks outside. Conversations were slow to start at first, but after a few brave youth asked their resident buddy a few questions, everyone else started to do the same. By the end of the morning, everyone – youth and the residents – were having a wonderful time filled with conversation and laughter. Looking back on the week, most of the youth listed that as the highlight of Summer of Service.
By being willing to step out of their comfort zones, our youth of RLC were able to show love to their neighbors in new ways thanks to the love, support, and care they receive here from all of you!
