What is our Role in Justice?

Posted on

My neighborhood sidewalks have the occasional poem printed on them for people to enjoy as they go by. One caught my eye earlier this summer but it must be on a route I don’t walk very often, because I only managed to find it again this week:

Tipping the Scales

by Georgia A. Greeley

I don’t know enough
about balance to tell you
how to do it

I think, though
it’s in the trying
and the letting go

that the scales measuring
right and wrong--quiver
and stand still

What great timing for me to come across it again, I thought. This week our youth are coming together to continue their reflection on the documentary “ A Time for Burning.”  At our initial screening, I was impressed at our youth’s interest and insight into racial justice then and now.

As our conversation continued in various forms this summer, the question of what exactly our role in justice is has come up over and over. Like the poem states, we might not always know enough to do justice perfectly, but I’m proud to recognize that our youth are certainly trying!

– Audrey Dontje Lindell, Director of Youth Ministry

Prayer

Gracious Lord, On this day may may I give to you those things that are causing me to be “off-balance” in this world. Help me to let go of those things that make my steps heavy this day. Amen.
